i think its really easy and i do my chihuahua about once a month or else he starts dragging his booty. also it helps if you use a baby wipe, counts down on the smell factor.

I am new here, can anyone tell me how Milo came out? I feel like I just read a book with the last chapter missing-lol
Now, again-if they aren't having problems you should just leave it alone? is that right?
Casey has scooted only for a couple of inches, a few times in the past 3 weeks since I got him, do y'all think he needs this done? I don't mind doing it, (I work cattle after all, castrating, branding, de-horning etc, so I don't get grossed out) but I don't wanna try to fix something if it aint broke either-

I have a chihuahua whom i adore and he is having a problem biting around his tail area.....he seems like it is really bothering him. I never realized anything about the anal glands until a lady at work told me it might be his problem...he scoots and he will stop in his tracks just to smell his tail area....and i have also noticed sometimes when he is sitting on my lap and i have light colored clothes on, where his tail area is he will leave a brown circle which absolutely stinks to high heavens.....almost a skunky smell..... My husband and i have noticed the smell comes alot lately and then he will bite his tail area???? does this actually sound like what might be wrong with him??? we had no idea he needed this taken care of ....we take him to the vet regularly and they never mentioned it either.....??? im really worried. I thought he might have a flea, so i bathed him in flea shampoo....and i then i thought the worm theory might also be true so i wormed him....but he is still doing this....does it sound like the anal gland is whats wrong??? i will appreciate any replies...!!!crying

I have a male Chihuahua who has issues with his anal glands. I have to express his every couple of months or so. I was told that once he matured that his issues would "probably" go away. HOWEVER, his did not. He is two now.

Below is a link that someone out here sent me a while ago. It demonstrates how to Express a dogs anal glands.
I do want to point out a couple of things:
1) Make sure your dog doesn't have another underlying issue ... make sure your vet gets to exam your dog throughly
2) the typical signs of anal gland issues are: A) the dog will drag its butt across the floor a LOT ... AND ... B) When the dog does a #2 they will bite in the direction of their own bottoms. Sometimes my dog will even flop down and lick his bottom as well. This tells me his anal sacks are filling up.

Because the junk in the anal sacks STINKS ... I usually bathe my boy after we get done expressing his anal glands.

Again ... ONLY do this IF you have a problem. Otherwise your vet can check your little one and express them during an exam (if need be).

Nancy that really sounds like his problem--most vets don't do this unless you ask them to check, WHY is beyond me--I have one that gets this problem but I do his during his bath my other two have never had a problem--I use to have a female years ago that I had to take in constantly to have hers done and the vet finally just removed her glands and that solved the problem--unless they have the problem DON"T do it--Nancy
get him checked soon. (it still makes me nervous to do this but I just take it real easy and Marko helps push.

Keep us posted

Hi Nancy,

Welcome to the board and glad to have you here.

The description you just gave sure sounds like an anal gland problem. One thing that you should know about this problem - - - - - - Nuclear Waste is kids stuff compared to a gland expression. shock

If you try doing it yourself be forewarned. Cover every opening you have. That stuff will find the tiniest crack and get on/in it every time. When I tackle this small problem I'm dresses to do battle. I have an old germ warfare suit, chemical gloves and "just in case", an extra oxygen tank on stand by. devilish

This is not a deed for the faint of heart, or for the weak of stomach. I've seen grown men rolling in the floor crying like newborn babes.

It is worth a trip to the vet or groomer or even your breeder if you feel comfortable with her/him.

Good luck and keep us informed. If we haven't heard back from you in a few days, we'll check the news for a report of an unidentified noxious gas report in your area.

I wish I could say I'm just kidding with you - - - - - yes maam, I wish I could say that.

Good luck,

Mimi and the Herd love struck
